The International Young Leaders Academy will bring together young leaders from Lithuania and Eastern Partnership countries

The goal of the event is to contribute to the promotion of international dialogue and partnership among young civil society leaders and politicians, fostering respect for human rights, democracy, equality, the rule of law, solidarity and justice.

In the first Session, the participants will be introduced to the peculiarities of parliamentary work. The Academy will start from the presentations about the official work of the Parliament and its highly important daily routine, which is often invisible; relations within political groups; coordination of work among political groups, the Office of the Parliament and parliamentary committees, and relations with other state institutions. The presentations will focus on the practical aspects of parliamentary activities that may be known only to a long-term member of the Parliament or an Office staff member well familiar with the activity principles and structure of the institution.

The presenters of the second Session will focus on the qualities required for a professional politician, namely, the features that help to be successful in this field, the qualities that an individual is normally born with and the ones that need to be acquired and developed. The participants will also discuss such concepts as leadership, team work, rhetorical skills, crisis management and other basic skills necessary for a politician.

In the last Session, which will be dedicated to encouraging young leaders to pursue political career, Lithuanian politicians will be invited to share their experience whereas young Lithuanian politicians will be asked to tell their success stories to their peers and encourage by personal example the Academy participants to get more actively involved in political activities. During workshops, the participants will get acquainted with the process of running for parliament and try to work out plans of their political election campaign.

The young leaders will be welcomed by Vydas Gedvilas, First Deputy Speaker of the Seimas; Emanuelis Zingeris, Signatory to the Act of Independence of Lithuania, President of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy and Member of the Seimas; Donatas Augulis, Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs; Jake Jones, Director of the International Republican Institute Belarus Office; Michael P. Murphy, Resident Director of the Belarus Program of the National Democratic Institute, and Viktorija Bražiūnaitė, organiser of the event, Chair of Young Leaders Forum and Secretary General of the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy.

The participants will hear presentations by Audronius Ažubalis, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current Member of the Seimas; Gintaras Steponavičius, Deputy Chair of the Liberal Movement Political Group and former Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania; Remigijus Šimašius, former Minister of Justice and Member of the Seimas; Rokas Žilinskas; Juras Požela and Paulius Saudargas, Members of the Seimas; Jonas Milerius, Secretary General of the Seimas, and others.

The Young Leaders Forum was established as a result of the Vilnius Declaration adopted during Democracy Days in Vilnius in 2010, when Lithuania was holding the chairmanship of the Community of Democracie (CoD). More than fifty young leaders from different countries then signed the Vilnius Declaration founding the youth pillar within CoD – the Young Leaders Forum.

The International Academy is funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania through the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme; Taipei Mission in Riga, and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, significantly contributing to the Project.

The Conference will be broadcast on-line on Monday, 13 October 2014, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on Wednesday, 15 October 2014, from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the website of the Seimas and the TV programme Seimas – tiesiogiai (Engl. Seimas – live) and on Tuesday, 14 October 2014, from 9.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 3.30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the website of the Seimas.
